Masonic Hotel in Cambridge, New Zealand offers accommodation, restaurant and bar in a beautiful 100 year old Historic Building. It has a beautiful Kauri staircase, stained glass windows and many other features that give the building its character and charm. Built as it is today in 1912, colonial but with a classical facade.
Upstairs accommodation has 11 bedrooms from a backpacker shared room, single rooms, double rooms and en-suite rooms. There is a TV lounge which leads to the newly erected balcony. (Balcony rebuilt when street renovations done in 2003). The Masonic Hotel was one of the first businesses in town to be illuminated by electricity in 1921 and hence how the nightclub got its name "Voltage".
The bar is warm and friendly with traditional pub food served at a reasonable price. Meals are available everyday. On the weekends we have a nightclub that is a great place to dance the night away. It has been said that our place has the best nightlife in Cambridge with its live music and special events. Both Friday and Saturday nights we either have a live band or a DJ.

Come to rural and rustic Cambridge and stay at The Masonic Hotel...YEAH RIGHT
I don't usually do reviews about places where we've stayed but I felt compelled to do this one to prevent anyone else from wasting their time and money on the establishment that can only be compared to being worse than "Hotel Paradiso" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjhMqwxWOWg&noredirect=1)
From the their web site it states...

The best night life if you enjoy watching people drug taking in the toilets, being sick in the courtyard, has a very poor selection of drinks at any of the bars, a hotel manager that hasn't got the bottle to stand up to noisy and unruly patrons and to top it all attracts what looks like the lowest life of Cambridge and the surrounding areas.

That's basically the time period where this hotel has stayed. From the outside it looks lovely with it's paint work, but as soon as you step on to the foot mat, you'll realise that this place is in dire need of repair. Carpets that are extremely dirty and soiled, the carpet at the top of the stairway is ripped and someone will (mark my words) fall down the stairs and have a serious accident, I'd love to know how the Hotel passed it's "council safety" inspection - maybe the inspector is a patron who knows ?
All the rooms we went into upstairs smelt and it wasn't just of dampness. The communal toilets and showers were disgusting even backpackers would think twice about using them. We were lucky enough to have the "En-Suite" which didn't have hot water when we got up in the morning, we also found that the electric wall sockets had the circuit breakers tripped after mid-night or were deliberately switched off - so that meant no-one in our party of guests could have their phones, iPads or Tablets charged, they couldn't use any laptops or heaters (if your were lucky enough to find one) in their rooms, and don't expect Internet access.
Most hotels and motels usually try to brighten up the rooms with pictures, mirrors and some decor but not The Masonic, it welcomed you with a dull dreary room which all of the guests we spoke to couldn't wait to get out of. Don't expect a quiet morning either as the cleaners switch on the Juke Box in the bar area and have the music thumping out while they are cleaning downstairs, so you have a lovely ensemble of "rap crap" and the "pokie" machines greeting you as you come down for breakfast. While I'm on the subject of food at the establishment...I will give a one star rating only because the kitchen staff seemed to be the only ones that cared about what they did, how the food was presented and even more so how it tasted.
I could go on about broken locks on the communal showers and toilet doors, in some of the rooms, broken glass on some windows, mouldy mesh curtains, dusty everywhere and the TV room which had a broken wall socket with exposed wiring, the list goes on and on.
I'm sure at one point in it's time The Masonic was a fabulous place to stay, but in 2014 it's nothing but a grotty, seedy pit which we so looked forwarded to leaving.
