About Waikaia Commercial Hotel:

Nestled in the heart of New Zealand's picturesque Southland region, amongst rolling hills and rugged farmland, lies the Waikaia Commercial Hotel. Steeped in history and brimming with rustic charm, this pub stands as a testament to the area's rich gold mining past and vibrant community spirit.

Its story stretches back to 1881, when lumber wagoned from Tapanui and timber from Switzers' first school and church were used to construct the building. Back then, Waikaia boasted as many as 23 pubs, all catering to the thirsty miners and prospectors seeking solace after a hard day's work. Today, only the Commercial remains, a true survivor and icon of the town's heritage.

Stepping inside is like stepping back in time. The original bar tables, crafted from old wool presses, stand proudly, adorned with farm implements and memorabilia that whisper tales of yesteryear. The warm glow of lamps illuminates exposed brick walls adorned with photos and trinkets, each one adding to the pub's unique character.

But the Commercial is more than just a museum of memories. It's a vibrant hub for the local community, a place where laughter mingles with the gentle murmur of conversation and the clinking of glasses. The aroma of hearty pub fare wafts from the kitchen, tempting you with classic Kiwi dishes like roast lamb and fish and chips.

And of course, the beer. Ah, the beer! Whether you're a seasoned ale aficionado or simply looking for a refreshing pint, the Commercial has something to quench your thirst. Local craft beers from Southland breweries sit alongside classic Kiwi lagers and international favorites. There's even a selection of cider and wine for those who prefer something different.

But beyond the beverages, it's the people who make the Waikaia Commercial Hotel truly special. The friendly staff, some of whom have been tending the bar for generations, make you feel like a welcome guest in their home. They're happy to share stories of the town's history, recommend local activities, and point you in the direction of the best fishing spots.
