The Highwayman Hotel Dunback is situated on State Highway 85 - commonly known as the "Pigroot" - is only 60 minutes (75 kilometers) from Oamaru and Dunedin.The Hotel is one of few historical buildings still in full use in the region, it was originally called the Junction Hotel as Dunback was the junction between Palmerston, Ranfurly and Middlemarch. Built in 1864 from the local shist and lime stone which is abundant in this area, the lime works also dates back some 120 years and still boasts the original kiln. The township of Dunback serviced the pioneers on their way through to the gold digging and was the last stop for the train which carried lime from the works to Dunedin. The train line closed in the 1960's but remnants of of the original track remain along the road to Dunback. The Shag river which is a small slow running river that flows nearby and offers tranquil spots for picnics, swimming and fishing.
